Strategic Planning: Myths and Masters


Strategic Planning is often misunderstood and badly done.

Masters know that the sole purpose of strategic planning is to improve performance in a sustainable manner; and that it can best be measured by whether the company is “beating the market”.

Myths include belief that it is a process, a task force or even a set of goals. A strategic plan is not created in an hour or a day.

A Strategic Plan is a dynamic plan, which aligns the company and guides day to day decisions on how to run the company to achieve or beat objectives. If your organization has as its goal to improve performance, that mission is not complete without addressing company strategy and its implications for operations.

Tom Rogge, President and CEO of Cramer Products Inc., will share his strategic planning successes as he has grown not only revenue but profitability at an incredible rate. He has guided the company, an ESOP, through several effective acquisitions and is diligent at implementing strategic plans.

Lavon Winkler, CEO of Milbank Manufacturing and past President and CEO of MAMTC, will share his knowledge of effective strategy and the basic strategic discipline necessary in every manufacturing operation.

Homer Kay, Vice President, North America Subsidiaries, Hallmark Cards will discuss his emphasis on decentralization and integration and the successful results.


Margaret Reynolds, Master Growth Catalyst, Breakthrough Masters Unlimited. Margaret started her career with Hallmark Cards, Inc. and remained there for over 20 years as she worked her way through Product Development, becoming the first General Manager to integrate greeting cards and specialty products in her division, and eventually was the lead strategic executive of the company. Today, Margaret runs a thriving business of her own helping others develop plans that break through barriers, get unstuck and help them accelerate profitable growth. She will share 10 best practices essential to an effective strategic plan.

Homer Kay, Vice President, North America Subsidiaries, Hallmark Cards Homer joined Hallmark in 1980 as a Product Cost Accountant and has held positions of increasing responsibilities including Materials Inventory Controller, Plant Accounting Section Manager, Cost Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Hallmark Brand Finance Director, Chief Financial Officer – Hallmark Cards United Kingdom, Managing Director Hallmark Cards UK and VP Finance for Acquisitions and Diversified Businesses.  Under Homer’s leadership, the North American subsidiaries delivered outstanding results with an emphasis on decentralization and integration.  Moreover, the subsidiaries are now looked upon as new growth engines for the corporation.  Homer earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University of Central Missouri and a MBA with emphasis in Finance from Rockhurst University.

Lavon Winkler, CEO of Milbank Manufacturing Since joining Milbank in 2005, Lavon has leveraged his extensive experience in lean manufacturing by leading its implementation into all facets of operations. Lavon began his career with Butler Manufacturing Company as a design engineer. During his 23-year tenure, he held key positions in engineering, sales, construction management and manufacturing operations, ultimately moving into senior management. In 2009, Lavon led Milbank Manufacturing into the renewable energy sector with its PowerGen™ platform.  Lavon is a member of American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) and serves on its leadership committee. He serves on the board of the Missouri Energy Initiative. Lavon earned his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri. He earned his MPPM in Private Management from Birmingham-Southern College.

Tom Rogge, President and CEO of Cramer Products Inc., Tom Rogge has been the president and CEO of Cramer Products, Inc. since 1991.  Cramer Products is 95 years old and is the leading supplier of athletic training and sports medicine supplies to the institutional/school market.  In 1995, Tom received an “Entrepreneur of the Year” award in the turnaround category from Ernst and Young.  The company has received many awards – Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Top Ten Small Business for 2008 and one of the Kansas City Business Journal’s “Champions of Business” for 2010. Tom is the former chairman and board member of the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, a current board member of the Olathe Medical Center, Kansas City Chapter of Association for Corporate Growth, the Kansas Health Institute and the Johnson County Advisory Board of Commerce Bank.  Tom has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.  Between degrees, he was a captain in the USAF as an aircraft maintenance officer.
